Thanking Jesus in Court Lands Hawaiian Man in Jail
July 17th, 2006 by Mike

FOXNews.com – Thanking Jesus in Court Lands Hawaiian Man in Jail
HONOLULU – Junior Stowers raised his hands and exclaimed, “Thank you, Jesus!” in court last month when he was acquitted by a jury of abusing his son.But his joy was short-lived when Circuit Judge Patrick Border held him in contempt of court for the “outburst” and threw him in jail.

Despite being released in six hours with the contempt charges dismissed, it makes you wonder what is going on in our courts. I wonder what would have happened if the man had exclaimed, “Thank you, lettuce!”

The judge probably woul have committed him to three days observation in a padded room! Seriously, it was probably the “outburst” and not the content of same that got him in trouble. Judges routinely warn the people in a courtroom before a verdict is read to refrain from any outbursts or emotional demonstrations.

Yes, that’s what judge Border says. That he warned both sides he did not want a “show of emotion” from either side. The defense counsel says differently…that the content was what brought the judgment.

However later, “Court minutes said Border later dropped the charge because he realized Stowers’ trial lawyer, Deputy Public Defender Carmel Kwock, did not have time to tell Stowers the judge had ordered both sides not to show emotion when the verdict was announced.”
