I Hate Going to Walgreens With My Wife

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

It’s not that I don’t like going places with my wife. I love to. I even like shopping with her…as long as there’s an electronics, hardware, or bookstore nearby in case I get tired of looking at women’s clothing or cookware or home decor items.See, my wife shops sales. And each Sunday, the Walgreens add appears in The Daily Sun. (more…)

Knife

Try this one on for size. Swiss Army knife lovers are rejoicing over this one, the world record holder according to Fox News.Personally, I like knives, but I can’t imagine carrying around this nearly three pound behemoth in my pocket, or my toolbox, for that matter.WARNING: If you wear your pants below your butt, they’ll be around your ankles if you carry this knife.

Travel Bag

Well, we’ve been traveling, so I have an excuse for not posting in a while. The trip to Naples, FL, to visit our friends was a wonderful as expected. We had plenty of time to catch up on each others’ lives and families, relaxed, had a couple of great meals at a couple of really good seafood restaurants, and generally goofed around. Now we are in Indianapolis, IN. We decided to come for a wedding for a young lady we have known for 25 or so years, whom we watched grow up, mature, and, now, wed. It was a gorgeous wedding and, as a bonus, we got to visit with several friends we left behind when we moved to Florida. We are now enjoying a few days with our two offspring. I even got to play one round of golf with my son before the weather turned cold and he had to go back to work.Monday, we begin our trek back to Florida to arrive Tuesday evening. Get back to the ‘ol routine, dontchaknow.

Trip To Dallas

Goody. Goody. Goody. We’re on our way to Naples, FL, to spend three days with our good friends Bill and Pam Bache. One of the drawbacks of moving when you retire is that you leave dear friends behind. Bill and Pam are two of the folks we miss the most.I dug out this old photo of us. We were in Dallas, TX, on a day trip through Ambassadair, the travel club of ATA Airlines. It was a mystery trip; we didn’t know where we were going until we got there. It was a fun day as are all of them with Bill and Pam.

Abstinence Doesn’t Work

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

I was dismayed to read that a school board in Maine decided to make “the pill” available to middle school students (10 year olds) without parental consent or knowledge.1 In several of the “pro” interviews, the first thing the interviewee would say was, “First of all, abstinence education hasn’t worked.”Let’s get real. Of course abstinence education doesn’t work if you don’t use it. Condoms don’t work if you don’t use them. “The pill” doesn’t work if you don’t use it. So saying that abstinence doesn’t work is a specious argument. Here’s a little list of the effectiveness of abstinence, condoms, and the pill:Effectiveness against pregnancy if used:

  • Abstinence: 100%
  • Condoms: almost 100%
  • The pill: almost 100%

Effectiveness against STDs if used:

  • Abstinence: 100%
  • Condoms: almost 100%
  • The pill: 0.0%

Effectiveness against pregnancy and STDs if not used:

  • Abstinence: 0.0%
  • Condoms: 0.0%
  • The pill: 0.0%

By the way. The article regarding giving children the pill was on the same page as an article explaining why folks are lobbying the FDA to not allow children to have cold medicine. Cold medicine: no; the pill: yes. Ironic, isn’t it?2

  2. Before you jump all over me about this, yes, I know the cold medicine was for children under 6. But then, again, how long will it be before we begin issuing the pill to 6 year olds? []
