A Defeat of Purpose

An article in yesterday’s The Villages Daily Sun reported that the Florida Citrus Commission raised the tax on orange growers 19% 1From 18.5 cents per 90-pound box to 22 cents per 90-pound box to pay for a more aggressive advertising campaign. The commissioners cited rising supermarket prices for the cause of decreased consumption of Florida oranges and orange juice. “If you basically don’t hammer home the message to the consumer that as prices increase you still have to buy this, the consumer won’t,” said commission chairman Stephen Ryan.

So, Steve, let’s see…raise the tax (price) 2The tax that will obviously be passed on to the consumer on a product that is losing market share because the price is too high . Then advertise to overcome the rise in price the tax brings. Hmmmm.

Oh, No. More CO2

The BBC reports, “Several thousand people have been evacuated from their homes in Ecuador by continuing volcanic eruptions.

“Tungurahua has been spitting out ash and lava for three days, and emitting loud explosions. It returned to life in 1999, after a century of inactivity.”

Just today, The Jakarta Post reported, “Mt. Karangetang on Siau island in Sangihe regency, North Sulawesi, has been spewing clouds of hot ash and lava for the last five days, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents, an official said.”

So far there are no reports of fatalities in either eruption, but Tungurahua and Karangetang have spewed hundreds of tons of ash and *gasp* carbon dioxide 1Think global warming into the atmosphere.

Thanking Jesus in Court Lands Hawaiian Man in Jail

FOXNews.com – Thanking Jesus in Court Lands Hawaiian Man in Jail
HONOLULU – Junior Stowers raised his hands and exclaimed, “Thank you, Jesus!” in court last month when he was acquitted by a jury of abusing his son.But his joy was short-lived when Circuit Judge Patrick Border held him in contempt of court for the “outburst” and threw him in jail.

Despite being released in six hours with the contempt charges dismissed, it makes you wonder what is going on in our courts. I wonder what would have happened if the man had exclaimed, “Thank you, lettuce!”

Cal Thomas Has a Point

Townhall.com::Are Republicans Kidding Us?::By Cal Thomas

House Republicans are being told by their leaders to run campaigns this fall on a platform of fiscal discipline that includes cutting spending. This from a party that has given us new entitlement programs resembling Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society; this from a party that has set new records in “earmarks” for pork barrel projects in their home districts and states; this from a party that under Ronald Reagan at least tried to eliminate the Department of Education, but under President Bush has thrown new money at it with no appreciable improvement in academic achievement.

What happened to the party of small government? How can the Republicans campaign on fiscal restraint? Is anyone laughing?

I am.
